Spyglass Hill GC
Taking its theme from Robert Louis
Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island,
Spyglass has hole names such as “Black
Dog” and “Billy Bones,” hints for the unwary
at this demanding 6,960-yard layout. The
PGA Tour lists holes 6, 8 and 16 at the Robert
Trent Jones, Sr.-designed Spyglass Hill GC
(1966) among the toughest on the Tour. Fea-
turing two distinctly different kinds of
terrain that influence the way the holes look
and play, the first five holes roll through
sandy seaside dunes while the following 13
holes cut through majestic pines with ele-
vated greens and strategically placed
bunkers and lakes to grab errant shots.
Bayonet GC
Overlooking the Monterey Peninsula, Bay-
onet GC ushered in an exciting new era in
December 2008 after the renovation of all
18 holes by course designer Gene Bates.
Long famous for its “Combat Corner”
(course is located at Fort Ord, a former mil-
itary base), the 7,104-yard course kept
intact the integrity of the challenging series
of dogleg left holes, retained its classic tree-

lined character and was visually enhanced
by the strategic placement of Bates’ classic
bunkering with snow-white sand. Also on
site is the Black Horse GC.
Pasatiempo GC
Within an hour’s drive north from Alister
MacKenzie’s famed Cypress Point GC on
the Monterey Peninsula, the world-
renowned architect designed what he
considered to be his favorite layout,
Pasatiempo GC. It’s also where he made his
American home that still borders the sixth
fairway. Included annually among
America’s Top 100, this 6,500-yard master-
piece underwent a complete restoration
(2007) by one of today’s top architects, Tom
Doak, after a trove of slides were uncov-
ered in the early 1990s detailing the
original design.
CordeValle GC
On 260 acres of gently rolling terrain in the
countryside of San Martin, 30 minutes
south of San Jose, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
took advantage of the natural elevation
changes formed by peaks and canyons (150
feet throughout the 18 holes), and
enhanced by sycamore and California oak
trees. The 7,169-yard CordeValle GC offers
an impressive variety of play for amateur
golfers and PGA Tour players who have
competed here at the annual Frys.com
Open. The facility has also been selected to
host the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open.
