COASTAL CALIFORNIA isn’t only about
bustling seaside villages and crowded
beaches. Morro Bay is an unspoiled slice of
the state, with enough coastal activities to let
visitors of all ages experience the outdoor
adventure of their choice, whether dipping
their toe in to try water sports, or diving all
the way in on hiking and biking excursions.
This quaint California seaside town will let
you do it all without having to fight crowds.

Rural Coastal Destination
Rising 576 feet from the ocean floor, Morro
Rock, an ancient volcanic peak and Morro
Bay’s landmark, stands at the entrance to a
beautiful estuary, adding a dramatic state-
ment to this quaint coastal town. Fishermen
have plied their trade here for decades, and
the seafaring spirit is an essential part of the
town’s vibe. Sure, beachcombing on the
miles of beaches is a reward in itself, but if
you’re looking for a particular marine
trophy, drop in to the Shell Shop, which has
the largest selection of marine seashells on
the Central Coast. Crill’s Salt-Water Taffy
shop is the place to get that essential seaside
treat. And window seats at local restaurants
are perfect places to linger, with amazing
harbor and Morro Rock views
.

outdoor adventure including waterbased
sports that connect you with wildlife.
Venture out in a kayak or stand-up pad-
dleboard, head out to sea to spy whales
and other marine mammals, or stay
closer to shore in the Morro Bay National
Estuary Preserve and its 800-acre wetland
with salt marshes and mudflats—home to
more than 250 species of land, sea and
shore birds, especially during winter
months. But lovers of the land have
things to do too, from miles and miles of
hiking trails to biking trails for a variety
of skill levels all within 10 miles of town,
whether you prefer your ride to be a
beach cruiser or hardcore mountain bike.
Great Value
An affordable coastal California destina-
tion, Morro Bay has an activity for every
family member, as well as the best in local
seafood, produce, wine, outdoor and cul-
tural activities, no matter the budget. The
variety of lodging options gives visitors the
opportunity to stay in waterfront hotels or
downtown hotels and motels, with package
discounts and lodging specials to make
vacations easier on the wallet. And some of
the best things to do in Morro Bay are free—
from the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum to
the Estuary Nature Center, and hiking to
beach activities.
