INDIO
Local Spirit, National Spotlight
by staff
In the Coachella Valley, Indio is earning new attention. Named to Fodor’s Go List for 2026 and recognized among top U.S. golf getaways, the city pairs big-sky desert scenery with a fast-growing food and arts scene. Date palms line the streets. Murals and large-scale installations anchor public spaces. Downtown is where it comes together.
Where Flavor Leads
Dive into Indio’s expanding food scene. Indio Taphouse serves polished gastropub fare in a lively setting, while Italica, hidden behind a silver door, focuses on Italian small plates. Victoria’s Café remains a go-to for traditional Mexican dishes. Gabino’s Creperie—featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives—draws regulars for its savory crepes folded into signature cones. At The Canopy at Citrus, a curated mix of eateries adds further range to the city’s expanding culinary roster.
Art and Shops, Front and Center
Indio’s public art program makes an immediate impression. Several monumental pieces first unveiled at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival now stand permanently in parks and along major corridors. In Downtown Indio, Kumkum Fernando’s The Messengers rise more than 65 feet above the street, standing alongside the sonic salute Heavy Metal, which debuted at Power Trip.
Downtown’s retail scene reflects its strong local roots. The Place gathers artisans and makers in a large marketplace with handcrafted treasures. A longtime Indio staple, Yellowmart has supplied outdoor gear and sporting goods for decades. Urban Donkey specializes in vintage apparel, while Rocks and Records keeps vinyl in steady rotation.
After Dark and Outdoors
Evenings center on live events and gathering spaces. Rosemary HiFi pairs standout vinyl sets with a curated selection of beer, and nearby, the Dune Room creates an intimate desert-cool vibe that keeps the energy going well into the evening. Center Stage anchors the action, hosting concerts, movie nights, and community events year-round.
North Indio brings its own energy to the table. Enjoy pours of small-batch beers at Indio Brewing Company, dig into bold Mexican flavors at Pablo’s Tacos and Beer, another Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives feature, or spend an evening at The Lights at Indio Golf Course, where illuminated fairways create a uniquely desert after-dark experience. For open desert terrain, the Indio Hills Badlands Trail traces a five-mile loop through ridgelines with valley views.
Stay and Play
Indio’s collection of stunning short-term rental homes from mid-century homes to poolside estates has helped earn its reputation as a trending winter stop.
Recognized nationally and celebrated locally, Indio has evolved into one of California’s most compelling desert destinations. Whether you’re planning a winter escape, a golf getaway, or a long-overdue desert retreat, Indio offers the kind of experience that turns a trip into a tradition.
Sunbaked. Radiant. Artful. Vibrant.
