Queen Mary
The Royal Treatment
by Susan B. Barnes
Step onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach and you’ll feel like you’re stepping back to 1936 when she set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England.
Considered Britain’s masterpiece and the most advanced ocean liner in the world of the time, pampered guests like Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and Walt Disney enjoyed meals in five exquisite dining rooms and two convivial cocktail bars, and likely kept active in the grand ballroom, swimming pools and the squash court during their transatlantic voyages. Since retiring from her seafaring days in 1967, the iconic ship has made her home in Southern California where she has since welcomed an estimated 50 million people.
Celebrating 90 years this year, the Queen Mary is as captivating today as when she first set sail. Step onboard the timeless icon and you will instantly be whisked back to the golden age of opulence, elegance, innovation and ingenuity. Great care has been taken to restore and preserve her grandeur, from intricate woodwork to historic fixtures, like “Unicorns in Battle” in the Queen’s Salon and the original flooring on the Promenade Deck. A brand-new Queen Mary Archive Museum showcases more than 50 of the ship’s artifacts, including several rare pieces that are on view to the public for the first time.
Though she no longer sails, Queen Mary invites guests to enjoy themselves onboard in myriad ways. Guided tours vary from three-hour VIP experiences with lunch included, to the one-hour Steam & Steel Tour that highlights her communication and engineering feats, to a one-hour art tour and the new Embarkation Tour; three hauntingly eerie tours are also available, for those who dare.
Dining onboard Queen Mary is as tempting today as it was 90 years ago. Grab a bite in the Promenade Café or a drink in the Art Deco Observation Lounge, or settle in for “Dining Through the Decades,” a new period-inspired menu served at the Chelsea Chowder House. Two not-to-miss culinary experiences are traditional Afternoon Tea on Saturdays, and Royal Sunday Brunch featuring more than 50 enticing dishes.
For even more of an authentic Queen Mary experience, stay the night in one of her original Art Deco staterooms featuring rare and vintage crafted woodwork, 1930s artwork and working portholes, not to mention modern amenities like WiFi, private bathrooms and luxury amenities.
What’s on Deck
There is always something happening at the Queen Mary, like “Murder on the High Seas: A Farewell Voyage to Die For!,” a comedy-musical-meets-interactive-murder-mystery-show; candlelight concerts; Sunday brunches with live music; silent discos and more.
